Every Language Matters
Language Explorers is Mother Tongues’ award-winning language awareness initiative for primary schools. Language Explorers activities are designed to raise awareness of linguistic diversity in the classroom and in the community and to promote an interest in language learning.
Language Explorers has been designed to:
encourage children to embrace all languages positively
nurture children’s understanding of linguistic diversity in the classroom and in the community they live in
enable children to build on prior knowledge and experience of language and language learning
encourage children of different languages and cultures to be proud of and to share their heritage
Through interactive games, art making, singing, storytelling and story writing, children become aware of their own language abilities and learn something new about each other and about the people who live in their local communities. Mother Tongues deliver Language Explorers Workshops all over Ireland.
We also provide training for teachers who want to implement this approach in their own school. Download our the Language Explorers starter pack to find out more.
Would you like to organize a workshop or a training session in your school?
It is very common nowadays to walk around any city or large town in Ireland and hear many different languages. Main streets are populated with road signs in Irish and English and with shop fronts that signal the presence of ethnic food, with signs written in Chinese, Arabic and Polish. We often pass by signs and posters written in unfamiliar languages, we hear sounds that we cannot recognise… but how do we react? The goal of the Multilingual Cities project, part of the Language Explorers initiative, is to encourage children to start observing and appreciating the diversity of languages we encounter in our everyday life.
